 The Protocol of Our Flag

Flag of United States

There is much to be known

When the United States flag is shown

It is a symbol of Freedom to those everywhere

and should always be treated with the greatest of care.

As our flag approaches, such as in a parade

It doesn’t matter if you’re in sun or shade

Turn towards the flag as at attention you stand

Over your heart is your right hand

Until it passes several paces ahead

If you are a male…bare your head.

In a parade, the flag should freely wave

at the top of a staff, with respect to the brave

It should never be carried horizontally

Draped over a vehicle it should never be.

If other flags are in a procession,

the United States flag must always be flown above them.

To give the most respect to our flag in sight

The flag should come first or be on the right.

A flag displayed at a home, business or school,

Hung above all other flags is the rule

Stars at the top next to the staff or pole

Any other flag flown from the same staff must be below.

With our flag nothing should ever be placed above

Except an American Eagle whom we love.

Our flag is the symbol of freedom to be honored night and day

For this reason we should treat it with respect in every way

Never draped over a table, desk or platform should be our flag we adore

Special care should be taken that it never touch the ground or floor.

The American flag should be raised at sunrise always first

Briskly in the morning with an enthusiastic burst,

Then at sunset it should be slowly lowered last

Unless there is rain, when it should be lowered first and fast

Flags made for all weather may flown day and night

After sunset the flag should be illuminated with a brightly shining light

A flag is flown at half-mast only by Federal, State or City order.

Then it should be raised to the top of the staff, then slowly lowered.

On Memorial Day, at sunrise the flag is flown at half.

Until noon when the flag is hoisted to the top of the staff.

Flags from other countries should be on separate staffs, same size and height.

In peace our Flag is centered. In war, no other flag flies to the right.

Please always respect our flag and do not use it carelessly.

To do so is an offense to the good taste of everyone and to our Great Country.

When a flag has become worn please be discerning

And if time to retire, should be done by respectfully burning

It should never be re-used, cut up or thrown away.

May God Bless America and you each and every day.
