Fred Kellett II, 81, Nisswa, a long time Brainerd High School coach, died Sunday, Oct. 5, 1997 at St. Joseph's Medical Center, Brainerd.

He was born November 29, 1915, in Ironwood, Michigan, to Fred and Ellen (Lilja) Kellett. He graduated from Ironwood High School and attended Marquette University in Milwaukee, WI. Fred then attended and graduated from Moorhead State University, with a degree in social studies and physical education.

Fred married Mildred Grife on December 20, 1941, in Iowa. After serving in the U.S. Navy during World War II, he taught physical education and social studies in the Brainerd School District until retirement in 1977.

Mr. Kellett was an assistant football and baseball coach and head bas­ketball coach for many years. His teams went to the state tournament 4 times; winning the championship in 1954. He was a member of the Minnesota Coaches Association Hall of Fame, the Brainerd High School Hall of Fame and selected “Coach of the Year” by the Minneapolis. Tribune. Fred also served on the water patrol for the Crow Wing County Sheriff s Department. He was a member of the First Lutheran Church of Brainerd, the American Legion and the Elks. 

Fred Kellett Brainerd Nisswa MN Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Dr. Joan Kellett, Brainerd, Carolyn Morgan, Camarillo, California; a son, Fred M. Kellett III, Edina; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Jack Kellett, Eveleth, MN and Allen Kellett, Apache Junction, AZ.

His parents, a son, Donald, a sister and two brothers died earlier.

Services were at 2:00 PM, October 9, 1997 at the First Lutheran Church, Brainerd. Pastor Mark Anderson officiated; the organist was Kathy Binsfeld and the soloist, Frank Asplund. Interment was in Evergreen Cemetery Brainerd. Arrangements were made by the Brenny Funeral Chapel, Baxter.
