October’s Nature

I wrote this after taking a walk down the Paul Bunyan Trail on a cold, windy autumn day. Although early October it is one of the most beautiful times of the year in Minnesota, sadly as the month nears its end it brings up memories of several devastating losses that all coincidentally happened near the end of October/ early November. Add to that, the season itself is about the end stages life and as the  lovely leaves the smell of decaying leaves, empty trees and cool temperatures brings up some of these feelings. I try to stay upbeat but sometimes this sort of stuff comes out... :/

Forceful wind rips off the leaves
They crash
to the ground

Not ready yet to go
They land
without a sound

*
Icy flakes
of frozen tears
Unfeeling
as they join in to peel

*
The memories
of life away
That is
October’s deal

*
Warm love of the sun
now replaced
With a cold bitter death
that must be faced

*
No hope left
under skies of gray
What was life is now stepped on and left to decay
